It took me a long time to realize that being an insufferable film/game nerd doesn't get more games made in the genre that I want and it also is offensive to the people who worked on these products.Irrational Games was the development company behind System Shock 2, as well as the Bioshock series. The 'dumb fps' wasn't for us, but it still has merit and tells a decent story(with most of the sharp edges removed). this will be the first time in my life that I say this. Holding other games to that standard is a bit unrealistic.Īs much as Irrational Games cribbed major story points, all the game play mechanics, and most of the atmosphere. These games are very much a combination of the talent, the lack of funds, and time period(which includes tools) that they were created in. ![]() Same time, SS2 was one more game that they had to release before being finished which is why the balance in the last 1/2 of the game goes out the window and psy was completely unbalanced through the first 2/3rds of the game. A lot of that difficulty was because devs didn't know what we know today about balancing games. Being force to restart after 5-10 hours into your first playthrough was not fun for a lot of people. Being forced to use less-optimum weapon for long stretches of the game just to conserver ammo and upgrade resources was not a better game. It doesn't improve the game when someone has to autistically, micro-manage their inventory and upgrades while scrounging mostly empty levels over and over again(tho the random encounters were fun). Save scumming through a game doesn't make the game better. I miss games being difficult, but let us be frank. That entire era of difficult games got left behind in the 1990s. I got a chuckle out of the Mac and Me comparison.Įverything you said is true. ![]()
